IDrive for WordPress Plug-in

Monday, May 24th, 2010

IDrive for WordPressIDrive has announced a plugin for the popular blogging platform, WordPress, to backup your blog data to an offsite location.

The IDrive Plug-in for WordPress will backup your WordPress blog data (files and MySQL data) nightly. If you need to restore data, it’s immediately available in your IDrive online backup account.

Like IDrive’s online backup produce, the WordPress plugin will initially backup all data, and afterwards do incremental backups, only transferring files and data that has changed.

However, the IDrive plug-in only works with WordPress 2.8.5+ running on a Linux / Unix system with PHP 5.1 or higher.

SugarSync in Japanese, IDrive in French

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Two online backup providers announced new multi-lingual versions of their applications today: SugarSync Continues to Spread Globally: Now in Japanese and IDrive Online Backup now in French.

Keep in mind these announcements are simply language translations of the existing applications, and does not mean SugarSync is adding data centers in Japan, nor IDrive in France.

In the past few months, SugarSync has added Spanish, Chinese and German language options, while IDrive boasts Spanish, German and Japanese versions.

IDrive Cancels Contest

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Crying BabyJust two days after announcing a huge iPad giveaway, IDrive pulled the plug on their contest early this morning:

The rules to enter the contest were quite simple:

sign up for an IDrive Online Backup account (either a 2GB free account or a paid account), download the IDrive Online Backup software and Login. This will automatically schedule backup of your critical data, which you can customize. You must be 21 years of age and above to be eligible. Proof of age will be required before receiving prizes. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. US RESIDENTS ONLY.

What doesn’t make sense is how IDrive determined “limited interest” in a contest where the only way to enter was to create an account. Perhaps they didn’t see a dramatic increase in customer sign-ups, like they expected? Or maybe the first two winners didn’t even know they entered a contest when they installed IDrive?

Whatever the case, IDrive throws a number of contests, but this isn’t the first time one of theirs ended ugly. Hopefully they’ve learned a few things, and we’ll see a revised contest from them soon.

320 GB IDrive Portable Daily Prize
IDrive is holding another one of their famous contests. Just follow IDrive_Online on Twitter, then tweet (nothing automatic) something with “#idriveonlinebackup” in the message, and you’re entered. You can enter twice per day, through December 31st.

Each day they’re giving away an IDrive Portable (320 GB USB drive for local backups), and from all of the entries, they’re giving away a Macbook Pro 13″.

You can also enter to win a Macbook by submitting a video… and since nobody won the video contest last time, if you submit anything of quality, you’ll have pretty good odds of winning that Macbook.

Good luck!
