Mozy Acquires BackJack

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Backjack online backupWord today comes that Mozy has acquired BackJack.

Backjack offered online backup in 10GB increments (20GB minimum), but gave away 4GB free space, and backed up external drives. The first 20GB was $96 per year; additional 10GB blocks were $24 / year.

Subscribers are being transitioned into MozyPro, to accommodate the backing up of external drives (something Mozy Home doesn’t support). A 20GB MozyPro subscription is $13.95 per month, or $153.45 for a year (1 month free). Even with a 15% off Mozy promotional code, users are still paying $130.43, $34.43 more than their Backjack fee.

However, as pointed out by Backjack, Mozy is the leader in online backup and provide quality customer service 24/7 (for Pro customers).

The following message was posted on the Backjack website:

Dear Valued and Loyal BackJack Client,

We here at BackJack, a Synectics company, want to thank you for your business and continued support. We appreciate that you chose us to protect your data.

We are writing today to let you know that Synectics has made a decision to focus on our core business and it is with great excitement that we announce the acquisition of the BackJack Online Backup Service brand by Mozy an EMC company.

We chose Mozy for the following reasons:

Mozy is the leader in online backup – protecting over 70,000 businesses and over 70 petabytes of information in their multiple global data centers. Mozy’s data centers are ISO 27001 certified and SAS 70 audited.
They provide simple, secure, and automatic backups and easy restores to ensure that their customers can easily access their data.
Mozy’s customers receive unsurpassed support with 24 hour live, U.S.-based technical support and an account management team.
Starting immediately, Mozy will be excited to assist you as BackJack transitions all customer accounts over. You will be given a MozyPro (Mozy’s business backup plan) account with the same number of users and GBs as you currently have at no additional charge to you. Mozy will fulfill the remainder of your backup subscription.

To start your MozyPro account, simply phone 877 669 9776 and identify yourself as a BackJack client. An account manager will walk you through your new account, explain the process and features, and answer any questions you may have. You can also view an FAQ here, and you can learn more about the MozyPro service by watching this video.

We’ve always felt we’ve had the greatest clients in the world and have thoroughly enjoyed working together to serve your needs. A warm thank you from the people you know on our Support and Customer Service teams such as Pat, Jean, Todd, Tim, John and Julie, as well as all the others you haven’t had the chance to meet working hard behind the scenes. Perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to cross paths again some time in the future.

Mozy and BackJack are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible and believe that your business will enjoy from the simplicity and peace of mind Mozy provides. Please phone 877 669 9776 or email backjack@mozy.com with any questions or concerns.

More Dropbox Security Problems

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Dropbox had more security problems this week, when they released some new code which allowed anyone to login to another user’s account without using a password. The bug was released at 1:54pm, realized at 5:41pm, and fixed 5 minutes later.

While the fix was a quick one, Dropbox users were not happy. For nearly 4 hours, all files stored with Dropbox were available for anyone to view. Dropbox says less than 1% of their users logged in during this time, and the accounts that logged in during the period have been emailed with additional activity-related details for review (via Dropbox blog)
