Mozy in the UK & Ireland

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Map of Ireland & the United KingdomIn case you missed the news last week, Mozy has officially opened up service to the UK and Ireland.

As an Internet-based company, this announcement may seem surprising. After all, users in the UK and Ireland could previously backup their data with Mozy. However, with closer data centers now available, users in the UK and Ireland can expect to see faster upload speeds.

In addition, users are now able to pay in their local currency. While £4.99 per month for unlimited backup is still a bargain, it’s still a 52% premium over $4.99 USD users were paying before. That additional cost gives users faster access to their data (thanks to physically closer data centers) and better security, thanks to stricter UK data security standards.

Users can signup for Mozy in the UK at mozy.co.uk or in Ireland at mozy.ie.

Save your Data, Save the Planet

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve seen some incredible things in this world (more on this later). To be with nature and stare in awe of its magnificence is something we should all stop and do once & a while.

Online Backups Review is committed to working with Mother Earth, so today we’re making two announcements:

First, we’ve made a donation to CarbonFund.org, offsetting the carbon footprint of our servers & small office for the next year. While we don’t have as many servers as some of the big online backup companies, we’ve glad to be doing our part.

Second, from today (Earth Day) through Arbor Day (Friday the 30th) we will plant a tree for every Mozy account signed up through us. It’s really simple… get your 15% Mozy promotional code, which tracks the customer came from us. Then working with the Arbor Day Foundation,U.S. Forest Service, and National Association of State Foresters, we’ll have a tree planted for each paid order from April 22nd through April 30th.

This program is being run exclusively by OnlineBackupsReview.com; trees will only be purchased and planted for paid orders referred by us. The best way to do this is to use our Mozy promotional code and save 15% with your order.

Save 15%, save your data, save the planet. Everybody wins.

MozyHome NOT Coming to Windows Home Server (WHS)

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Windows Home ServerRumors started flying a couple days ago that Mozy is Working on a Windows Home Server Software Client for their unlimited MozyHome service. At that time, we didn’t report on it as there was little proof to the claim, other than an email from an unnamed tech support employee:

Our Research team is working to develop a client for Windows Home Server for MozyHome customers. Once it is developed you can switch back to MozyHome and back up Windows Home Server.

However, when I reached out to Mozy to get an official statement, they replied:

Mozy supports Windows (Home) Server with its MozyPro offering, not MozyHome. We do not have any plans at this time to include server support in our MozyHome offering.

So, if you’re running WHS, don’t expect to be able to use MozyHome anytime soon.

Gigmax Online Storage Launches

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

We learned that today, Gigmax is officially launching their Windows online storage service. Gigmax claims remote access, file sharing, and off-site backup as a few of their features.

GigmaxGigmax.com, LLC was established in August 2005 with the intent of making it easier for people to store and transfer files without having to carry around any tangible object, such as USB flash drives.

Also, rather than emailing files to yourself and then having a bunch of different emails with a bunch of different files, the goal of Gigmax.com was to have users just store all their files in one place.

You can get 2GB for free, or pay up to $24.99 / month for 150GB, with other options avilable in-between.
Gigmax pricing system

Gigmax’s “Community” section is interesting. There, you can see the most popular shared file, the top users, and stats on the various types of files shared. Currently, images, executibles, and a few mp3s are in the top 25 downloaded files.

While Gigmax lists off-site backup as a feature, the process isn’t automatic, like other online backup services. You can only save the files to your Gigmax drive, whereas services like Mozy or Backblaze will backup all of the data on your computer.

If you’re looking for some online storage space, Gigmax may be for you. Just be careful what files you have set as private, versus public.

SugarSync Adds “Upload by Email” Support

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

SugarSync LogoSugarSync, a 4-star rated online backup service, recently announced support to upload files via email. Now, any file that is attached to an email can be saved in your SugarSync account. In addition, the files are scanned for viruses upon arriving at SugarSync. The email address can be kept private, or shared with colleagues to allow them to upload files into your account.
