Carbonite admitted their customers have been receiving spam due to a third-party provider misusing the data.
Carbonite CEO, David Friend says,
Fortunately, the only thing that happened here was that this vendor spammed our customers. They never had anything more than email addresses, so customers’ personal information was not compromised in any way and this in no way affects their backups. We continue to actively monitor the situation as we consider this a very serious matter.
However, as Richi Jennings of ComputerWorld points out,
…this is the same online backup company that lost the backups of thousands of its customers, while denying any data were lost…
It’s also the company (who posted) astroturf-positive reviews on Amazon…
Carbonite’s privacy policy states, Carbonite will not sell your personal information to third parties,
but states nothing about giving customer’s personal information to third parties for business use.
We’ve never been a big fan of Carbonite, mainly because they feel customer’s videos do not need to be backed up, and their unlimited backup
slows down as you upload more data. But these business practices that keep coming back to bite them should cause users to question the real security of their backed up data.
