Backblaze USB Drive Restores

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Backblaze LogoBackblaze is doing away with DVDs as an option for restoring files, replacing them with USB flash drives.

DVD restores used to be an option, at a cost of $99. This is now replaced by a 28 GB USB drive (that’s about 7 DVDs of space), at the same price.

Unlike DVDs, you can reuse the USB drive when you’re done restoring your files. In addition, even the most compact netbooks have a USB port, while they may not have a DVD drive.

Our Backblaze review will soon be updated to reflect this change.

Mozy Stash Review

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

MozyMozy‘s new sync feature, Stash, which complements their core online backup service, was moved to public beta access today. While Mozy Stash works as a stand-alone service, the cloud storage space it uses is shared with your Mozy online backup account. If you still have an unlimited account, you’ll need to convert it to a metered online backup plan. (more…)

Dropbox Android App

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Dropbox has released version 2.0 of their Android app which allows you to save files to your Dropbox account or access (download) files already saved to your account.

While we don’t believe Dropbox is a very good online backup solution, we do like to use it to sync select files across multiple computers. If you’re only looking to be able to access your files from your mobile device, apps from CrashPlan, Mozy and Carbonite will do this for you. But the Dropbox app allows you to also upload files.

Backify Shuts Down

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

BackifyRemember when we asked, At these prices, Backify is sure to pick up some of the online backup market share, but how can they afford to operate?

Well, now we have our answer: they can’t.

An email has gone out to all Backify users on behalf of LiveDrive (the service which Backify white-labeled) which explains that Backify is no longer a Livedrive reseller, and your data is gone.

Please note that any data you backed up using BACKIFY.COM cannot be retrieved and we recommend you establish an alternative backup service immediately.

Livedrive then warns users of credit card fraud that Backify has been accused of, and recommends to look at an alternative online backup service.

Carbonite’s Privacy Breach

Friday, November 4th, 2011

CarboniteCarbonite admitted their customers have been receiving spam due to a third-party provider misusing the data.

Carbonite CEO, David Friend says,

Fortunately, the only thing that happened here was that this vendor spammed our customers. They never had anything more than email addresses, so customers’ personal information was not compromised in any way and this in no way affects their backups. We continue to actively monitor the situation as we consider this a very serious matter.

However, as Richi Jennings of ComputerWorld points out,

…this is the same online backup company that lost the backups of thousands of its customers, while denying any data were lost…

It’s also the company (who posted) astroturf-positive reviews on Amazon…

Carbonite’s privacy policy states, Carbonite will not sell your personal information to third parties, but states nothing about giving customer’s personal information to third parties for business use.

We’ve never been a big fan of Carbonite, mainly because they feel customer’s videos do not need to be backed up, and their unlimited backup slows down as you upload more data. But these business practices that keep coming back to bite them should cause users to question the real security of their backed up data.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Friday, October 14th, 2011

STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Back UpOctober is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and we believe a solid backup solution is part of keeping your data secure. This year, the NCSA is encouraging everyone to get involved (even the big guys like Google are joining in!).

The National Cyber Security Alliance says home users should

Back it up: Protect your valuable work, music, photos, and other digital information by making an electronic copy and storing it safely.

And businesses should

Create a plan in the event of a data loss.

There are many online backup services to choose from. It’s important to understand that with any reputable online backup provider, your data is encrypted before it’s sent to their data center for storage, so nobody else can read your files. Some, like SpiderOak, take this a fit further than others. It’s a balance between ease-of-use and data security.

CrashPlanCrashPlan announced the immediate availability of apps for both iPhone and Android users today.

If you recall, it was just a few months ago that Code 42 Software, CrashPlan’s parent company, acquired mobile developer Recursive Awesome. Speculation was, at the time, that mobile apps to access your CrashPlan data were coming – and today, they’re here.
