IDrive Cancels Contest

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Crying BabyJust two days after announcing a huge iPad giveaway, IDrive pulled the plug on their contest early this morning:

The rules to enter the contest were quite simple:

sign up for an IDrive Online Backup account (either a 2GB free account or a paid account), download the IDrive Online Backup software and Login. This will automatically schedule backup of your critical data, which you can customize. You must be 21 years of age and above to be eligible. Proof of age will be required before receiving prizes. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. US RESIDENTS ONLY.

What doesn’t make sense is how IDrive determined “limited interest” in a contest where the only way to enter was to create an account. Perhaps they didn’t see a dramatic increase in customer sign-ups, like they expected? Or maybe the first two winners didn’t even know they entered a contest when they installed IDrive?

Whatever the case, IDrive throws a number of contests, but this isn’t the first time one of theirs ended ugly. Hopefully they’ve learned a few things, and we’ll see a revised contest from them soon.

MozyHome NOT Coming to Windows Home Server (WHS)

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Windows Home ServerRumors started flying a couple days ago that Mozy is Working on a Windows Home Server Software Client for their unlimited MozyHome service. At that time, we didn’t report on it as there was little proof to the claim, other than an email from an unnamed tech support employee:

Our Research team is working to develop a client for Windows Home Server for MozyHome customers. Once it is developed you can switch back to MozyHome and back up Windows Home Server.

However, when I reached out to Mozy to get an official statement, they replied:

Mozy supports Windows (Home) Server with its MozyPro offering, not MozyHome. We do not have any plans at this time to include server support in our MozyHome offering.

So, if you’re running WHS, don’t expect to be able to use MozyHome anytime soon.

Gigmax Online Storage Launches

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

We learned that today, Gigmax is officially launching their Windows online storage service. Gigmax claims remote access, file sharing, and off-site backup as a few of their features.

GigmaxGigmax.com, LLC was established in August 2005 with the intent of making it easier for people to store and transfer files without having to carry around any tangible object, such as USB flash drives.

Also, rather than emailing files to yourself and then having a bunch of different emails with a bunch of different files, the goal of Gigmax.com was to have users just store all their files in one place.

You can get 2GB for free, or pay up to $24.99 / month for 150GB, with other options avilable in-between.
Gigmax pricing system

Gigmax’s “Community” section is interesting. There, you can see the most popular shared file, the top users, and stats on the various types of files shared. Currently, images, executibles, and a few mp3s are in the top 25 downloaded files.

While Gigmax lists off-site backup as a feature, the process isn’t automatic, like other online backup services. You can only save the files to your Gigmax drive, whereas services like Mozy or Backblaze will backup all of the data on your computer.

If you’re looking for some online storage space, Gigmax may be for you. Just be careful what files you have set as private, versus public.
