Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Data Doctor Ken Colburn explains the top five mistakes people make when backing up their data.

  1. Buying an external hard drive w/out backup software
  2. Installing backup software, but not setting the scheduler
  3. Not verifying your backup
  4. Only having 1 copy of your data (no incremental backups)
  5. No offsite backup set

Optimum Online Backup

Cablevision, a high-speed Internet, digital cable tv and digital voice service provider in the NY, NJ & CT tri-state area, has partnered with Carbonite to provide their users with online backup. Optimum Online Backup is described as a secure, reliable and easy-to-use online data backup solution, exclusively for Cablevision’s 2.5 million Optimum Online customers.

Cablevision Optimum Online customers can get 2 GB of free backup, or pay $44.95 for unlimited backup. This is a discount over Cabonite’s $54.95 annual fee, but still more expensive than using a 20% Carbonite offer code and paying only $43.96 per year. Carbonite does not offer a free service plan direct to customers, so the 2 GB free plan is exclusive to Cablevision customers.

Mozy to Power eYun Online Backups in China

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

eYunChina Telecom Co. and Decho Corporation, an EMC Company, announced a strategic partnership to deliver cloud-based services in China. The partnership’s first offering is the eYun service, which is a Chinese-branded version of the popular Mozy online backup service.

eYun, (“e-Cloud” in Chinese) is a Chinese online backup service. Partnering with Chine Telecom brings Decho’s Mozy service to the majority of Internet users in China. 15,000 users have successfully completed a trial, and the service is now being offered to all.

Harel Kodesh, CEO of Decho Corp, says,

China is now the largest Internet market in the world. We’re delighted to partner with China Telecom, the largest broadband provider in China, to deliver a world-class online backup service to the Chinese market through eYun.

While I can’t read Chinese, I’m guessing from eYun’s website that they offer a 2GB free trial (like Mozy does here in the US) and have paid plans for 10GB and 300GB plans.

Restoring a previous version of a file with Mozy is easy. First, navigate to the file on your computer and right-click, then choose Restore Previous Version (more…)
