Hurricane Bill Reminds Us To Backup

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Hurricane BillThe Royal Gazette recently posted a piece entitled, “Protect your technology from Hurricane Bill, says CSB“. Interesting advice, from the Computer Society of Bermuda.

Not only were islanders reminded to unplug electronics (to save them from electrical surges), but they were also told to backup their data.

One tip is to get a flash drive and copy Word, Excel and PowerPoint files to it for portability.

Any media you can’t bear to lose should be burned to DVDs including films, music and digital photos.

Important work files can be transferred to an external hard drive – but do it before your power goes out. Either use a back-up program found on your computer or manually copy files over.

So you can backup to a USB flash drive, or burn to DVD, or copy to an external hard drive… oh, and you have to do all of this as you board up your house and prepare for the storm to move in.

If they were using an online backup service, all of this data would be securely and regularly backed up, far away from the storm’s path.

While we may not all have the threat of hurricane’s hanging over us, there’s always something that can destroy our beloved data.

Monday, August 24th, 2009

In what seems like a logical step, SafeCopy now offers folder sharing, in addition to file sharing. Many times you’ll want to share an entire project with someone, which has multiple files in a single folder. Instead of sharing the files one-by-one, you can now share the entire folder.

Apple Time Machine & Mozy

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Earlier this month, users of Apple’s Time Machine who were doing online backups with Mozy were reporting multiple problems. Mozy’s backup process was causing the Time Machine to freeze, stopping local backups until Mozy finished.

Decho spokesman Devin Knighton said,

The good news is that no one is losing information. Mozy and Time Capsule still work. They just are not working together at the same time.

The issue was raised on August 11 / 12, and by the 13th version 1.4.3 Mac release for Mozy, which fixes the Time Machine/Time Capsule issue, became available for download.

SafeCopy Backup Review Posted

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Our review of SafeCopy Backup has finally been posted! We really dug into this one, and found some key features that make it a strong buy: such as multiple computers on a single account, instead of buying a license for each computer.

However, restoring files takes a little time getting used to, and the iPhone app is lacking features and core functionality.

Take a look at our SafeCopy review & let us know what you think!
