Of course online and local must happend and of course if you really need to be safe you can use external method too.
I am using a backup software called http://www.dmailer.com/dmailer-backup.html , and their software is free and i can use it in a lot of other ways. They have online storage service too at good prices if you want higher than 3gb because until 3gb their online storage is free.
Also a easy to use software that wont get you any problems and will do the work.

Online and local both need to happen. Use a secure offsite server like Amazon S3 for the best results. I use backazon.com, and have had great results. Good article though, very detailed.

In my opinion, people should be backing up both locally and online. If you backup to a waterproof and fireproof external hard drive such an the ioSafe Solo (http://www.iosafe.com/3) AND backup online, your data will be protected against pretty much every eventuality.
