Storage Costs of Jungle Disk vs SpiderOak

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Christian, over at ianalisĀ ~geek unwired, did some research and then followed up with a blog post comparing the storage costs of Jungle Disk versus SpiderOak. His conclusion:

The best payment option is SpiderOak’s yearly subscription.

There are a few exceptions, but overall, SpiderOak gives Christian the peace of mind he’s looking for, at an affordable rate.

Toodledo Tests Backups

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

ToodledoWord came out this morning that Toodledo found themselves with a corrupt database on their hands as their datacenter was sitting through a severe spring storm.

So, here’s the story. A big storm went through the city where our datacenter is located. The datacenter decided to proactively switch to generators. During the switch, something got screwed up, and the power went off for a few minutes. As (bad) luck would have it, this caused our database to get corrupted. We are currently working to bring it back online and restored from the live backup. The crack team at Rackspace is on the job. Thanks Rackspace! Unfortunately, the database is so large, that it will take some time to transfer and verify all the data. Hopefuly not more than a few hours. We know that this is very bad, and we apologize for any inconvience that this will cause. Please check the forums when we are back online for a full report.

Update: Its obviously taking longer than we expected and we are really sorry for that.

Update #2: I know that our downtime is totally unacceptable. I am literally sick to my stomach about this whole thing. We have successfully restored all of the data up until June 10, 4am CST and we are working very hard to restore the remaining 12 hours of updates that happened before the servers crashed. Obviously, this has been a major event. We had multiple simultaneous errors happen that have made recovery slower than anticipated. Because our database is so large (many many many gigabytes), it just takes a long time to transfer and import the data. I know that many of you are upset, and all I can say is that I am deeply sorry. We are already starting to rethink our backup strategy so that recovery doesn’t take so long in the future.

The good news is that Toodledo has these backups and they’re able to restore them. Of course, the bad news is that restoring is taking a while, causing their users to be sitting around wondering, just what was on their to-do list?

The bottom line: your business needs a backup and restore plan.

June is Backup Awareness Month

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Backup Awareness Month June is Backup Awareness Month and to honor this distinction, Backblaze is giving a 1-year license every day this month. If you haven’t read our Backblaze review yet, the gist of it is they offer unlimited backups for Mac and PC for $5 / month. They’re one of our top-ranked online backup companies.

Now if you’re reading this, you’re at least interested in backing up your data. However, 94% of computer users do not do regular backups daily, although each year, 46% of computer users lose electronic data including photos and music, from viruses, theft, and hard drive failures.

Help spread the word that June is Backup Awareness Month! Share this story on Facebook or MySpace and tell your friends.

CyberDefender & Mozy Partner

Monday, June 1st, 2009

The deals between Antivirus companies and online backup companies just keep coming in. Shortly after McAfee partnered with Mozy, CyberDefender (an award-winning provider of PC security) also announces they will also be partnering with Mozy. PC security companies who typically focus on antivirus and antispyware products are now adding online backup to their portfolio.

While CyberDefender previously protected users computers from viruses, spyware, malware, worms and trojans, it offered no protection from user-error, hardware failure or catestrophic disk loss from theft, fire, or flood. However, in partnering with Mozy, users now have an added layer of protection for their data.

There’s no word yet if CyberDefender users will receive any type of discount when adding Mozy online backups to their PC security precautions, but users can get a Mozy promotional code to save up to 20%.
